What Do You Even Say on Those LP Catch-Ups?
Small Talk, Big Checks: Navigating LP Updates with Style
Let’s talk about something no one trains you for: the LP check-in call.
You finally got the meeting on the calendar. It’s a 30-minute Zoom. You sit down, water bottle in hand, chest slightly tight... and then it hits you:
What the heck do I even say?
Do you launch into fund performance? Share recent deals? Comment on the weather in Connecticut? Pretend like you didn’t stalk their LinkedIn five minutes ago?
Don’t worry—Fund1Frank’s got you.
Here’s the Call Game Plan:
Think of this as your LP Catch-Up Call Sandwich™:
1. Top Slice: Connection > Conversion
Start light. These calls are relationship maintenance, not fundraising pitches (yet). Lead with a personal touch. Try:
“How have you been spending your summer?”
“Any travel coming up?” (LPs love travel.)
“I saw your firm backed [XYZ company]—congrats!”
2. Middle Meat: Updates That Actually Matter
Give a crisp, confident overview of what you’ve been up to:
Fund progress (capital raised, deployed, reserve strategy)
Recent investments + what you're seeing in the market
Any relevant learnings, pivots, or themes emerging
⚠️ Avoid rambling into your entire investment memo. You're not being diligence-ed. You're being remembered.
3. Bottom Slice: Leave Them with a Job
People remember you when they’re engaged. Close with:
“Anyone in your network you think I should connect with?”
“Would love your thoughts on how other GPs are handling [X].”
“What’s top of mind for you right now in this market?”
If it’s a warm LP you’re courting:
“Still very much in the build phase, but would love to stay in touch for when the timing’s right.”
📓 Frank’s Bonus Tips:
Take notes. Actually do this. You’ll need them for future follow-ups and Fund II.
Send a short recap. Three lines max. Reinforces memory and momentum.
You’re not just reporting. You’re reconnecting.
Every LP call is a rep in the gym. You won’t get jacked from one, but done right, they compound.
Stay consistent. Stay curious. Stay charming—and stay Frank.
Til next time,
